Default Has anyone played with the Cascade TR4?

The website says "shipping soon" but I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with preproduction examples. It's a ribbon + tube mic. I'm looking to augment my meager collection (Pearlman TM1 and Shure SM7b) with a ribbon, but am trying to keep the cost down.

    Thanks,

    Aaron

I'm really happy with the Fat Heads I purchased last summer. They've got pretty decent frequency response for $150.00 ribbons ($300 for a "stereo pair"), seem to be built like a truck, and the folks at Cascade are very willing to talk with you re: any questions. I ended up using tracks from a pair of DPA 4061s in spaced omni for a DVD project of a music festival in Switzerland last year, but was very impressed with the Fat Head tracks (classic figure 8 Blumlein array, on the same mic stand as the DPAs), especially with the more precise stereo image the Blumlein provided. I'm about to build a Jecklin disk to see if i can get closer to that soundstage image with the DPAs...

I've since used them mainly on electric guitar cabs and, while Royer is likely not losing sleep up there in 121-land, I'm certain the Fat Heads are very much worth 1/8 the price of admission. I'll be happy to email a comparison.

    Default remarkable

I tried to post this last night but my cable went down in the neighborhood.

The CASCADE fat heads are remarkable and not just because they are a nearly unparalleled value. Based on that product alone, I would think all offerings by CASADE, including some sleepers of the past, should be evaluated seriously.

Nope. A total waste of time and money. But tomorrow may be better.

Having heard Mark's work, knowing Mark's reputation for critically demanding sound, and just because, I JUST ordered a pair of the Cascade ribbons....

We shall see,,,but I have the strangest feeling that I will not be disappointed...

The Fathead pair came in today...and they are far better than I could have even hoped....smooth, accurate, warm, maintaining the old school vibe of RCA 77s at a fraction of the cost...

Short review: don't be stupid. Buy these mics...longer (and a bit more eloquent) review to follow later....

    Mark - THANK YOU!

    Great Ken.

I used mine yesterday as the S in an MS configuration. It seemed to hold its own against a ribbon costing 7x as much.

I don't know if it will hold up under abuse. But I do not plan to abuse it. I have myself for that.

    regards,
