Q: "THAT" modern guitar sound

When I work with David Cleveland, he has two very different cabinets sourced by the same amp (a 1 x 12 and 2 x 10) and I put a 57 and a ribbon on each one. Last week it was a 57 and a 122 on the 12, and a 57 and a CAD 7000 on the 10s. These all four show up on the console and I mix and match between them to come up with the right sound. Lots of colors/varieties are available that way.

All the mics are equidistant from the speakers so phase issues are not a problem with mixing/matching.

Okay guys, thought it would be nice if I wrote back and let you know how I went. (I hate unclosed threads! )

Quad tracking was the trick I was after!

Here's another tip I worked out. If you can, DI the guitar too, then mix that in slightly. It gives a nice bit of definition to the distorted tones, producing a great overall sound.

As always, remember that when tracking distorted guitars, less gain & less bass are your friends!

yeah, I like to use that box or the Michael Wagner box to split the gtr signal to multiple heads or multiple amps. I don't do a lot of re-amping though, I try to nail it the first time around

here's an example of an approach I think I mention earlier in this thread. This is a blend between a Vox AC-30 and a Mesa Dual Rectifier recorded simultaneously and then stacked, panned left/right. One side would favor the AC-30 with the Mesa tucked underneath and then the other side would favor the Mesa with the AC-30 tucked underneath. Mics were SM57 on the AC30 and SM7 on Mesa both thru 1073 Neve's...
