    Default Jogging, Texas-style

Wow - last week I mace'd a dog that came charging up on me in a very aggressive manner while I was out walking around 10pm. I shoulda been packing some .380 hollow-points instead!

(CBS News) Pistol-packing Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a message for wily coyotes out there: Don’t mess with my dog.

Perry told The Associated Press on Tuesday he needed just one shot from the laser-sighted pistol he sometimes carries while jogging to take down a coyote that menaced his puppy during a February run near Austin.

Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger – loaded with hollow-point bullets – when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. He’d also seen coyotes in the undeveloped area.

Yep...I don't jog, but when I can I like to take long walks. Always carry a .25 Beretta for snakes, banditos, renegade Cheetos, etc...

Kind of stupid if you don't, really. Nature can and will win every time, when it comes down to it.

We've got a pack of coyotes around here, back in the woods. I don't see them very often, but you can hear them howling sometimes. Kinda freaks me out with the kids and all.

Coyotes and snakes rarely are a problem with people. Carry a walking stick if you are a-feared.

Where I walk all we get is cougars, but you'd get in big trouble if you shot them.

Where we hike it's bears that are the problem - and they do frequently attack. We also have some wild cats, but they're more rare.

We carry the blasting caps and bear spray. It's illegal to carry a pistol in Canada (though some hikers do anyway). Hiking with a rifle is too cumbersome.
Am I the only one without a small type signature?

I saw a story about a couple that went hiking with their cute little dog and were attacked by wolves. Apparently the alpha wolf was after the dog. My first thought was "What a moron. Who would go out into nature like that unarmed?"

Moral: Don't take your pets too far out into nature. They look like double cheeseburgers to wild things.
