Roland R880 info and advice needed !

I have recently got hold of a R880 as part of a studio clear out.
there is no remote controller and no manual.
it lights up and passes a signal but nothing else.
I have been told that this is normal and it cant be used without the remote.
can anybody out there tell me if this is true ?

I am unlikely to use it myself so Im also interested in selling it on

You're right. You need the controller. There was also a firmware revision at one point. Prospective customers would probably want to know about that.

I believe Doug Joyce (Animix) still uses these. Perhaps he might be interested in it.

I used to like the R880 for the occasional small/medium room, which it did pretty well. Anything else was, well, I don't think it would ever replace a 480! Roland had all sorts of plans for it when it first came out, saying that they would have the DSP reconfigurable as a studio tone generator and test set or as a sampler (presumably with extra storage bolted on).

The original Roland Sound Space box was pretty wild, anyone else use that? You could generate some interesting surround effects from two speakers with it such as someone talking from behind you into your left ear. In the early 90s I mixed a test piece for it with the marketing guy who had put together a hip hop track with various effects and voices from vintage Tom and Gerry cartoons which he had coming at us from all directions. I vaguely recall height was doable too, and reasonably convincing.
