    Icon5 Mid-level AD/DA

I'm shopping around for a mid-level 8-channel AD/DA converter, probably in the $2K range. I've looked at Lynx, Apogee, and RME, to name a few. I seem to be drawn to this RME, but wanted some feedback...

I mainly need a unit to connect to my preamps (API lunchbox, A-Designs, etc.) and feed my DAW via lightpipe (or FW). Any thoughts?

Well, here's a new product so I have no idea of the quality but I can't imagine that it would be poor. It's the new interface from UAD:

Certainly more than an AD-DA but it may be just the ticket. Price for the DUO version is $2K. Worth a look.

I did some projects with a friend's Mytek 8 x 8 LightPipe AD/DA. I don't know the price range or if it's a current product, but the recordings sounded very good, very refined.

Just sold a Rosetta 800 and Bigben. Very good but definitely colored. (in a good way) The Lynx are equivalent but possibly less colored. Both very good and totally usable. I had a fireface here for a while, never did click with it but I can't criticize the converters.

I just bought an Orpheus from Rich. LOVE the converters. Really, really great both ways. If you can find a used Orpheus for $3K you won't be disappointed. Definitely more transparent and detailed than Rosetta/Aurora/Fireface.

I've been using Mytek 8x96 for years. I've no reason to change.

BTW Apollo is all about summer 2012. Definitely an epic upcomer.

I've used those. They're 'useable.' But for the $2k range, I'd certainly look elsewhere. I've had the Apogee Rosetta 800. Again, ok, but I'd look elsewhere.

My top recommendation would be Metric Halo. The sound you get for the price is the best deal out there, IMHO. The 2882 units can be had for just under $2k. The LIO-8 units are just under $4k.

I've also got Lavry blue units. If you could find some used units for cheap, you'll certainly appreciate the sound.
Am I the only one without a small type signature?

I love these threads...everyone has a different definition of what 'good' is, what 'mid level' is, etc. Just about everything is usable, and has been used to make great sounding records. FWIW, I've read someplace BoB O reporting the new M Audio Profire FW stuff to be really pretty dadgum good - just goes to show ya.

If it matters, I use an ADAT/MADI SSL Alphalink that pretty much serves my needs well. I would likely buy it again, but get the AES version instead of optical...

Just bought an Orpheus, love the converters but the pres are poor so I Googled and it turns out Prism uses the exact same PGA2500 chip on the Orpheus pres that you will find inside much cheaper products like Maudio stuff, Apogee Duet, etc. Good chance the new Profire may share parts with more expensive gear.
