And here's the Terminator version of the home stereo. Thanks, Sony. $98.

"That 2 inch stereo separation is unreal." Said no one ever.

    That's both funny and not.

So how is this going to work out for labels? Distribution channels? Or maybe the better question is, where is the money going to be made in the new model?
Am I the only one without a small type signature?

I talked to a publishing administrator just this week. Said that he let 30 clients go last quarter. "It just doesn't make sense when the royalty checks are $100. When it was thousands, it made sense."

Oy. So now what? Are those who continue to make money doing it off the remains of the old model? Or is there a new model emerging where people are finding a way to make a decent paycheque from recorded music? I find it a tough pill to swallow thinking that recorded music is being relegated to 'promotion' for other income streams. But that seems to be the trend.

If y'all would have predicted this earlier, then we'd be through it now and on to something else

Independent pub admins are getting annihilated right now. I know 2 and they both have said the paperwork & legwork has tripled or quadrupled yet payments have been chopped down by 50% or more. So like Lynn says above, they make 15% on that $100 royalty check but it requires 4 times the work to get there. Not worth it...

What sucks is, I've talked to several artists who are asking, "Now what?" - They would have no idea how to go out and collect the revenue due them on their own yet a hundred bucks per quarter is a $400/yr they really need...

I am in the dark as to how much of the royalty distribution process is automated, if any. I'd guess maybe some large parts are, but the 'connective tissue' not.

Even if it is automated someone still has to tabulate splits, usually on both the writing AND publishing sides. So that 54-cent payment from Pandora has to be tabulated amongst all writers and then all publishers and then the admin gets 15% of whoever he admins for...
