    Vocal/General app.

I would say a FET U 47 or the like but I don't know how they would work on a rock or country band live.
I would think they would feedback too much.

If I were thinking more towards vocal applications, I'd probably lean towards the SM7. It works well both on stage and in the studio.

I've tried using a number of large diaphragm condensers live on stage for vocals and for pop / rock situations that are louder than jazz / folk / bluegrass, they are more of a liability than an asset with their sensitivity and the often directional pick up patterns.

If I were thinking more towards general applications (instruments, choirs, whatever), I'm more fond of a good SDC like an AKG C480 with a CK61 capsule. I like the general flexibility of a good SDC - especially one with interchangeable capsules.
Am I the only one without a small type signature?

Yeah, the SM 7 is a good choice!
    Forgot about that one.

I like sm7's but my problem with that thought is they sound broken a few % of the time, particularly certain singers. I've not owned another mic that can sound as good on majority of singers, and then horrible on a particular few.

If I were leaning directional dynamic, it'd be an EV RE-something or other. RE-15/16/20.

The 16 has been my fave for a very long time...but I have no track record to speak of, so ignore everything I've ever said.

THAT said, I use it on most sources, and it always seems to just work, usually very well

Oh yeah, RE 16. Another great choice.
    Let's don't forget the venerable MD-421!
Man, I still love all of the standard Multi-purpose mics!

Funny, I'm not a big fan of the 421 on a number of things.
