Face to Face with Dan Kennedy of Great River

Dan and I speak frequently so he willingly agreed to talk with me about the Great River MP-2NV and also his newest piece, the EQ-2NV. I asked him lots of questions about both of these units, about their design and uses. It's a fascinating look into the philosophy of the designer.

This interview took place on the AES Exhibit Hall floor at the 2003 AES show in New York.

Lynn, you did a good interview with a decent overview of the NV series.

The comment that caught my attention was when Dan mentions that the transformer on the "loading" selection on the MP2NV "has a moderate ringing response up about 60 kHz, unterminated, which slopes back into the audio band at about +1dB at 20kHz, giving the sound a high freq lift, also changing the distortion response of the amplifier." (sort-of a quote with a touch of paraphasing.)

"The classic design" is often also the "cumbersome" design. I'm glad a designer of his caliber is sensitive to that fact. I'm very excited to her more about and from this pre-amp.
