How about a "home Run front end" list?

You know the units that have a pre and a comp or an eq...
I enjoyed the pre list so much.

    Good idea.

When it coms to "all in one" boxes, I've got a pretty short list there as well.

Actually, I've only heard two that I fell in love with.

    Millennia STT-1

Great versatility, probably more than any box ever made. It can make dozens of different sounds. Tube pre, SS pre, transformer or non-, SS EQ (glorious), tube EQ, SS comp, tube comp, de-esser and more. And if that's not enough, swap out the tubes and you've got dozens more again. An amazing box. Great construction, beautiful finish. It's the kind of piece that stands out in a rack, has a high "buttons per square inch" factor (always important) and makes quite a visual impression on the clients. When I've had it in the studio, all the engineers come over and stroke the front panel and say "Man. I need to get me one of these." And that's before they hear it.

    API Channel Strip

This is a great sounding preamp and EQ bundled with a surprisingly lame compressor. It's a one trick pony when it comes to the sound, but it's a great one trick. I had it for a week and only found one thing that didn't sound great through it. Actually it was just that one vocalist that sounded better through the Focusrite.

How's that for a short list.

PS: I would like to welcome Millennia as a sponsor to this site. Their commitment to great audio and furthering that cause is appreciated. Show them your support and thank John LaGrou personally at

I'm really happy with my HHB radius 40. I like it for vox, and it's a pretty good D.I. for bass too.

    I've heard the Millenia's great.
The API looks a little funky.

The new GML front ent looks interesting too.
I can't believe it's $6000. Man that's a lot of money for a channel strip, mono to boot!
There's an article about it in the latest Audio Media Magazine.

If you add up the price of the stereo units that it has parts from (GML pre, EQ, compressor) and then divide by 2, you'll see it's right in line with buying the separates.
