I can't imagine that being a hot seller. Any studio owner with $13k, I'm thinking, is not likely to spend it on that.

Maybe the naysayers were right about the current state of Neumann....
Am I the only one without a small type signature?

......but hey!!!!!!...........you can sample incoming signal in excess of 20k so you can finally actually record stuff you can't hear anyway

A number of my favorite mics have a significant roll off by 20k....

I keep wondering 'what were they thinking...'

It seems obvious to me what they weren't thinking.

The Neumann Solution D is a cool idea and very well thought out.

Unfortunately it seems to be the answer to a question no one has asked yet.

Ive had a chance to hear this mic and I have to admit I wasnt all that impressed with it, even if it cost $4000 I still wouldnt of been impressed. It was just too bright for my tastes, vocalist and etc. Also, do keep in mind that I heard this at Ocean Way (Nash) in their live room. They were having a mic convention with about 7 or 8 manufactures and there was about 50 some people in there, sfwtw.

I know that Lynn probably had a good chance to hear this mic in the control room, since he was engineering the mic comparisons for this event. Just curious Lynn, what did you think of it?

    Cheers,
    Bryan W.

P.S. I agree if I had 13k I would definitely purchase other mics, can you say Brauner VM1, yummy!!

Exaclty. If it were priced at $1300 it might see some sales. But at this price....

I had the chance to hear the Solution-D version of the 184 at AES Paris this last year. I wasn't blown away, but I did walk away from the demonstration thinking to myself "that's a really good sounding mic."

Remember that Neuman has MAP pricing, so actual street price is probably a fair bit lower.

I don't know what the 184 would street for, but you wouldn't need a preamp or converter, so I think there's value there. My uneducated guess is few preamp/converter combinations could come close on noise performance. Perhaps on a foley stage this is a great solution?

At 20 bits, you are on the verge of dynamic range covering fly-farts-at-20-feet to untolerable pain. Really, what more could we need?

    Lynn:

Very funny, I guess for me the question is...

Let's see over 300 Million iPods against how many of these mics will return us to fidelity over quantitiy.....

I wonder why it is so expensive, must be trying to get return on R and D.

If you think about it, it's only a mic, preamp and A-D.....

    Mic $2500
    Mono Preamp $1500
    A-D $1000
