Here is an amazing article (pdf): http://home.comcast.net/~markfuksman...ibbon_info.pdf

It is a BBC Monograph on the technical aspects of the BBC PGS ribbon mic, this was the forerunner of the Coles/STC 4038 (I think it is actually pretty much identical). Discussions include: magnets, pole pieces, ribbon length, width, and thickness, tensioning, corrugation, accoustic damping, enclosure, etc.

(I found it here: http://www.prodigy-pro.com/forum/vie...6710bbad7a913e )

Another transformer (used by Marik @ prodogy pro) for ribbon mics is the Lundahl LL2911.

You can get it here for $60 http://www.kandkaudio.com/transformers.html

You can hear an accoustic guitar sample of the Shinybox ribbon mic with the stock transformer (?), the Cinemag CM-9888 , and the Lundahl LL2911 along with an AKG 414 (EB P48 in figure 8), a new Shinybox 46, and also a Mystery mic.

Here are the direct links to the samples:

"Cinemag Shinybox23C" http://www.shinybox.com/products/rib...s/ac/23CAC.aif
"Lundahl Shinybox23LAC" http://www.shinybox.com/products/rib...s/ac/23LAC.aif
Even listening on crappy headphones, you can see that these samples do sound significantly different. How much of the difference is actually the transformers is always up for debate...

Also, SilverhammerNZ from this thread http://www.prodigy-pro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9034 posted a couple of nice clips using the shiny box mics. Direct links:

Edit: Here are three recordings of an accoustic guitar using a Shiny box 46, an R92 and a R84. Very interesting IMO. http://gearslutz.com/board/showthrea...0&page=2&pp=30

Another site, specializing in vintage harp mics and also ribbons. Has a picture of an RCA crimper for making ribbons.
