Just few days ago I was recording monochord and made a quick initial "soundcheck" to decide whether I should use DAV or rather Pendulum. Here it is. What do you think - which is which ? abduction
preamp A preamp B Recorded on a pair of Schoeps MK2. The performances are not identical (kind of quick soundcheck improvisation - so don´t study each tone separately). Position of the mics and instrument is however 100% the same in both cases. |

I like preamp B. It seems to have a more liquidy and fluent sound.More
aquariumish. If that is an actual term. |

thanks so much.
preamp B - "of course" is my clear choice. I would describe B as accurate, but enhancing the intimacy of the tone, not grainy, a wider smoother frequency response. Overall it seems like it is drippimg with more quality. Preamp A, seems sterile and unfocused in comparison; plus I get ear fartigue from it. I'd need to EQ, compress, and re-mic position quite a bit to get this to work. I could work with either of these preamps very nicely, but Preamp B would be a natural for my acoustic tastes. I am dying to know the answer. Please PM me. regards, Mark

To make it more funny, I will record 2-3 more samples with different instruments and then we will see ... Stay ready for the next 2-3 hours

Oh wait, here is one more. Originally this was a test of Schoeps MK2 and MK21 when recording from bigger distance (far from ideal mics position for this case). But these two preamps are there again (classical guitar). But the performance are not really identical:

Actually, I should not be so sure. The musical passages are different. But there is something about B which is great. Best, Mark

Oh yes, this what one should have in mind ... Just to perceive the general sound "mood" ... I will try to play something more even later ... |

For monochord, "preamp B" is my favorite--smoother.
For guitar, "mk21 preamp B" is my least favorite--harsher. The "mk2 preamp A" is probably my favorite (perhaps it is a bit louder?), but it doesn't seem like there is that much difference. |
