Under the Hood--Inside the Preamps

After the listening tests were complete, and we unstacked the preamps, several engineers wanted to see what they looked like on the inside. Heck, they're engineers, right? So we took the opportunity to have a look "under the hood." Here are pictures of a few. Below is Lynn Fuston working on opening the dbx 786. Note the Mytek 8x96 AD converters in the background.

The Vintech, below, based on Neve 1272 components.

The differences between preamps extends far beyond the sound. And component selection and even component placement on the PC board all have a part in determining the sound of a preamp. The Grace Design 201 is noteworthy due to its astounding design and build quality. Lynn Fuston's finger points out the stepped attenuators and rainbow ribbon cabling, run at right angles. Also notice the ruby ring on Lynn's finger. That's the Olivia ring, commemorating his daughter's birth. She is mentioned in the credits as well.

A component level view of the Buzz Audio MA-2 (below). Another beautiful piece of design work. Note the paired op amps and individual heat sinks on each amplifier stage.
