The Gear and the Mics

The DDA AMR 24 console at Classic Recording in Franklin, TN with the scoring sheets all ready to go. The speakers we used were Tannoy DMT-10 MkII's. Look closely and you'll notice the knee-high rubber wading boot on top of the speaker. That was because we had 12 engineers in the same control room along with 34 preamps. There was no doubt that "it's gonna get deep...."

The microphone positioning for the stereo acoustic guitar recording. David Cleveland (below) plays his McPherson guitar into an Audio-Technica 4033 (near the neck) and a Neumann KM-84 (near the body).

George Cumbee checks the mic positioning relative to the guitar body. The string on the mic stands was used to measure the distance to the guitar body and head stock between each listening session. We were extremely careful to maintain the guitar's relationship to the microphones, because any change in position would change the sound.

The vocal mics (below) that we auditioned before deciding to use the Manley Reference mic on the left. The other mic options we considered were a Neumann U-67 (middle) and a Neumann U-87 (right). Notice the pencil that was taped to the Auratone to use as a measuring device to make sure the distance from speaker-to-mic was consistent.

Below is a picture of the switcher/trimmer that was built by Dan Kennedy of Great River (co-designed by Tim Farrant of Buzz, NZ) for these tests. It is a stereo switcher, with separate knobs for the left and right channel. Note the row of multiturn trimpots above the rotary swtitches. The unit is basically a passive trimmer with a single buffer amp built in to drive each output. A photograph of the inside of the unit is also displayed beneath the switcher.
